Assignment 2 - Photo Manipulation

Photo manipulation is the application of image editing techniques to photographs in order to create an illusion or deception  (in contrast to mere enhancement or correction), through analog or digital means.(Webster's Dictionary 2006 edition)

In my opinion, photo manipulation is image processing which uses optics and digital handling to revise, recover, and prettify photos. It is the most impact technology on the photography.

Photographers in the past usually use optics to edit photos. However, in the modern times, people usually use photo manipulation application from computer. For this assignment, I decide to use Picasa 3(from Google) to manipulate this photo.

The first original photo was taken by Nikon D3100 when I hung out with my friend at UT St.George campus. This is the first time I touch SLR camera. As we can see, the picture had poor light because at dark. Also, the picture’s orientation have slanted to the right. Therefore, the first thing I decided to edit this picture is crop it(manual operation:4581:3084). Next, I used “perpendicular” section of Picasa to correct the picture’s orientation. After correct orientation, I want to make this picture more colorful, so I used “supplementary lighting” section to make the picture brightly. This is the picture after all editing:

As we can see, the buiding is more magnificent after editing, and the light make the picture more colorful.

The second original photo was taken by Sony WX9 when I was walking at Ontario Lake shore. Once again, we can find it is darksome. Also, the picture is hazy and a little bit colorless.
When I editing this picture,I want to highlight that boat. The first thing I did is crop impurities (at the bottom). After crop the impurities, I used “supplementary lighting” section again because I want make the picture brighter. Nevertheless, the picture still looks lack of something, so I improved color saturation of the picture. After all processing, the picture look much better than before.

Hope you enjoyed my manipulation!
